I would have been there, I think, but I was away - I suppose the clipboard thing might be because Dave Wakelin was the lead singer at the time so RR has never needed to know all the lyrics off by heart - just his bits.
I hope The Selecter's gig in the Ballroom next month is better supported then if 300 people are "rattling around" in there.

I remember the Lee Perry Bob Marley tribute thing on The South Bank (probably about 6 or 7 years ago now) and Roger was reading the lyrics for the couple of Marley songs he sang that night. I've got lots of time for him, but that didn't look great!
If I remember rightly Shan got Nevved on the way home!

yes lets hope so TTN....here your point regarding the clip board but surely he owes it to the paying audience to have adequately rehearsed.
I haven't got my tkts for Paulines gig yet...anyone know if they are still available? _________________ ..as they sing while you slave, and I just get bored!

Great Performance better than I expected Ranking Rogers band is much faster than Dave's but Dave has the better voice on some songs like I confess and Save It For Later. I wonder how Can't get used to losing you sounded without Dave Wakeling _________________ I'm having bags of fun

I Really enjoyed Saturday night. Shame to see Roger reading lyrics though!! Can't decide if it was a joke or not???!!!
Good to see him singing 'Can't Get Used to Losing you,' never seen him perform that before.
Shame Mr Cornwell has a problem with Ranking Roger's 'The Beat', surely Ranking Roger is only doing what Pauline Black, Buster Bloodvessel are doing???
What's wrong with a good Ska night out if it's good fun???
(Bloomsbury Ballroom....get your bar sorted!!!)

Mike is just pissed off with bands going round and round and doing nothing new and I agree with him and that extends to The Specials-I for one wouldnt want em to go out touting the hits non-stop.Theyve done that now, got back into the swing of being together and the news that they intend to record new material is good news and a step in the right direction.Madness have shown the way.Stagnation creatively will be detrimental to the scene in general. The "smaller" bands around are knocking out some great stuff but the bigger bands need to lead by example and ensure they use some of our excellent home grown bands as support. _________________ ANGER IS AN ENERGY www.specializedproject.co.uk www.thespecials.com www.theskapones.co.uk
This is from myspace thebeatofficial. ""At long last Roger and the boys have recorded the first album for The Beat since the early 1980..s. Currently being mixed by Adrian Sherwood the album is once again a work of pure brilliance by a band whose musical prowess has lasted 3 decades.""
Unfortunately it looks like this album will never be released.
I heard a couple of demos and it sounded good.
Have to say also that Ranking Junior is a talented guy. Respect. _________________ Am I The Dog That Bit

that message has been on the beat site for ages.
Ill take em more seriously when they do release something. As much as I love the music there has to be a time when you wanna hear new stuff- see a new promo tour for the record- see real effort as a musician. _________________ ANGER IS AN ENERGY www.specializedproject.co.uk www.thespecials.com www.theskapones.co.uk

Saw Rankings Beat last year and if i remember right i thought they were shite, just didn't enjoy it at all.the only good thing to come out of that gig was the efforts of Ranking Junior-top lad.
In saying that i would like to hear some new material released at some point _________________ Bouncers bouncing through the night

I agree that the older bands have gotta come up with something new to really keep their flame alive.
You don't see Iggy Pop standing still do you?
I think bands like The Amphetameanies, Bombskare, Two Tone Club are out there making original music based upon the whole heady mix that underpinned 2-tone.
I suppose it's a matter of incentive. If people pay to see 'em play then what's the need for new tunes?
The Specials could get away with touring again and again if they wanted and over time the audience will dwindle, no matter how many adverts the tunes play over.
I wouldn't want that. I hope they don't.
I've found Roger's Beat really lifeless the last coupla times I've seen them. Blown off stage both times by Nev, I'll admit.
What's Nev up to. He needs to get some original stuff out.
