I feel its a bit of a balancing act for some of these guys though. For while those of us `in the scene` would all like to hear new stuff, a lot of the audience would only want to hear the older songs. I`m sure we have all been at gigs where its been mental when the hits have been played, but noticebly quieter in the audience when something unfamiliar is aired. Like it or not,a lot of people would only go and see these acts A) if there in their hometown and B) if they play a set full of stuff they know.
The Beat had 300 or so for a gig playing their best-known stuff, how many would they have if they announced a gig playing all new material? _________________ Living in the sunlight, loving in the moonlight, having a wonderful time.

ITS ALL A LOAD OF BOLLOX!

Madness did Norton Folgate at Hackney Empire and it was full.
New material doesn't have to mean a crap night out. It has to be good and people have to want it.
All material is new material at some point.

Well said Nanker,I have to say that I totally agree with the two posts that you have posted on this thread. It's a shame that others dont see things the same way but if we were all the same it would be a boring place _________________ www.thespecialslive.com

This is true.
Hearing the hits is great fun, there's no doubt about it, but to get something new, with fresh energy, that's sounds good is equally as exciting.
I was blown away by Norton Folgate at Hackney because the band had spent time making something special. NW5 sounds like a classic Madness song already.
Nick's doing some good stuff as King Hammond, and managing to hit the mark making new tunes in an old style and giving people a fun time at gigs.
Some of those new tunes are going down a storm live. Monkey Boots especially.
I saw Two Tone Club support Bad Manners and I'd never heard or seen 'em before, but they were fantastic. Unknown to me, but delivering great tunes and a great performance.
Who wants a version of a band doing a version of their best songs.
I see Wilko Johnson's jumper on the band wagon and touting a tour as 'in the spirit of Dr Feelgood' or some other old bollocks. Just be Wilko ffs.
The Animals tour and I don't think there's any animals left, and the yardbirds. Sad!
At least the Blockheads are the Blockheads and they are still making new music, some of whch is very good. I still like them for their sheer spirit and they are a good live act.
The Faces with Mick Hucknall and not Rod was a bloody disgrace. By all accounts Hucknall did alright, but fuck that! Mick Hucknall and the Faces. I'd sooner have by knackers chopped off.
It's all part of the money-go-round.
Earn a living by all means, but make it an honest one. Sell what your peddling, not what you think you can get away with.
What next Rhoda Dakar gathers up some Spice Girl and All Saints and goes out as The BodySnatchers?

Don`t get me wrong,I personally love to hear new material, and we have a local club here that has put on some great Ska acts such as Beer Beer Orchestra playing 95% new songs. Its plain that not everyone feels the same way though, both from audience reaction and numbers through the door. _________________ Living in the sunlight, loving in the moonlight, having a wonderful time.

The thing about new material from the classic 2 Tone bands is it's got to be as good, if not better then the classic hits, which is a very tall order.
For me Madness have done it with 'Liberty of Norton...' To see a band go to so much trouble on new material is rare these days.
But I haven't heard others doing it yet. I'm very much looking forward to hearing Dave Wakeling's new material.

The recent tour was older and family-oriented and more about revenues than the gritty and exciting mood the first time around. What new subjects can they write about; sore backs and utility bills?

All the things we discuss on this forum - increase in Education fees. Bands advertising their gigs - but not being clear about the line up.
Feelings about the breakup/reunion.
Roddy wrote "Little Bitch" - Dan mentioned the "Lily Allen, Peaches Geldorf" crowd - that's still very relevent.
This Labour/Liberal alliance is something we have yet to see unfold?
Now, The Band members have the added experience of raising children/and the lens that filters our lives through. _________________ marigold

There's enough going on in this world for anyone to write about

Iggy Pop has released 5 albums in his 50s....3 of which have been great and two of them very good (one with the Stooges!)
Nick Cave is 52/3 The last Bad Seeds Album and the Grinderman albums have been fucking storming.
Jerry Lee Lewis as just released Mean Old Man and he is in his 70s. A good record, with a fine line up.
Jones and Simenon, both in their 50s, are making great music with The Good The Bad and Queen, Carbon Silicon and Gorillaz.
Ronnie Wood, new album is fucking brilliant, in his 60s. I'm going to see him play it live next week and can't wait.
Suggs, Barso, Smash, El Thommo, Woody, Bedders, Chrissy Boy, all kncoking on or just over 50, recently released the Livebty of Norton Folgate - an album about the here and now and the gone before. As good as they ever were? No, better!
Being old don't mean you have bothing to say.
Age is experience.
You should have everything to say.
Perhaps just a bit quieter.
Or not.
What?

Thanks and of course - should not have a liquid lunch
I always associate that one with Rod? and Terry sings It. The deadly march of time and thinky cells depletion. _________________ marigold

Wars, financial bailouts, conservatism; they should come out swinging and make a dent, not a memento.
