What did you think Salmongang?

Students here are assigned and I teach about Emmett Tills murder - which is still and will always be controversial. Articles quoting his Mother are absolutely wrenching, throughout It all she remained a stoic and loving woman.

With J.D's strong and open stand against any form of racism - in addition his upbringing as a son of a Cleric - I think one of two things.

1/It was a dark comment as a man of colour has the noose around a white mans neck.
2/ They were goofing around and not being raised here/ did not Intend any comment of disrespect. Lynching of Negroes was not happening in Great Britain.

It's interesting that they have a noose? - they are not in a country setting or barn?

It's a subject that you can't really use in humour. I don't think for one second It was in support of this practice.

good replies marigold, and yes, there are the heavy and utmost serious racial interpretations/historical implications, but i imagine they were just having a twisted in-joke laugh (however crass). when i saw this photo, it made me think of the specials' inter-band relations (then and now). i wish (and still hope) that the specials can, in 2011, be a "carnival of peace." any which way, this is a very frightening photo...

Think it had more to do with the reporter that was there.
Like the Lady said where did it come from.
A joke a muck about.
Wise words Marrigold.

And people love to attach great significance to the mundane. Rolling Eyes Laughing

It's like modern teachers and their endless didacticery.

We are responsible for the feelings and impressions we may/may not intend though Hugh. Possible subversive sub text is an honest question and debate.

If we all lived in Canada or Switzerland - a lot of issues may not come up?

Calling a party BNP - read white?

Acknowledging Cultural sensibilities is paramount. To call an African American Male here "Boy" - is not acceptable. In The U.K. that's not the case.

Nappy for Diaper - causes a lot of trouble. Referring to hair - It is insulting.

I have noticed that didactic has become a hipster put down?

Best to attach a modifier to its derivative.

She swelled their minds with creative didacticism.
