Paul in your book you're wondering now, you talk about 2 gigs in the Netherlands in 1981, but you don't know where or when, I found out the were.

But first this.
The October 18th, 1980 concert is called "the Countdown Festival" it was in the “Jaap Eden Hal” organized by "Veronica" (A broadcasting company) with Madness and, Belgium singer (Rene van het Groenewoud). This hall is really an ice rink, these days they don't do much big concerts. There I’ve have seen Aswad and Steel Pulse (and Ruud Gullit in the crowd Cool ).
This is of course the famous stage collapsing concert Shocked Cool (It was never a real concert hall to begin with). This concert I saw on TV as a kid. Smile

1981
The concert in April in “Zwolle” was in the “IJsselhallen”, nothing to do with ice, but the IJsselmeer it’s a lake. (Think WWII operation Market garden)
You also talk about an ice rink with Madness, I think this is mistaken with the Countdown festival concert. Confused
Because on another music forum somebody wrote about “his best concerts” and one of them was The Specials at the “Stokvishal” Rolling Eyes in “Arnhem”. The concert programmer of this concert hall also was one of the programmers from the Paradiso in Amsterdam, so he arranged that a lot of international bands came to a verily unknown place like Arnhem (think WWII Operation market garden and movie: A bridge to far)
On the Dutch wikipedia page about the hall you can read that The Specials were one of many bands that performed there. It was famous for it acoustic quality, they tore it down in 1983.

I’m thinking about contacting the guy who has gone to the concert in Arnhem
Also I still have to talk some more to a relative of mine who was at the infamous Countdown festival.

Idea Maybe this will help others in finding bootlegs or collectibles or whatever.
And maybe (I heard a rumor I wasn’t perfect) somebody has another piece of the puzzle, or can correct me.

The Countdown Concert is the same as The Veronica Festival Concert they are both the same. only the countdown version was edited for TV. the full show is refered to as the Veronica Festival and the shorter version is refered to as Countdown. somebody on here posted pictures of The Specials from a show in The Netherlands but I can't remember if they were from 1980 or 1981. but I'm almost sure it was 1981 Smile

Ahaaaah! Razz

I understand it. I only know the edited version, because it came on the TV show "Countdown" from Veronica. It was the cool version of our Top of the Pops with live concerts.

Do you know if it's possible to get a hold of the complete version of the show?

Veronica was part of our public broadcasting system, cool and youthful. They became commercial with big success but after some bad years, they were got a new owner a new look but was never the same.

The result of this all is that the vault full of musical history from Countdown stays locked and is forgotten. Shocked

This year I want to go the museum of our public broadcasters. I'm curious to see new material from Pinkpop 1980 or maybe even to see material from Countdown, or to be surprised. Very Happy

I travelled to the Jaap Eden Hal and Zwolle gigs. The Jaap Eden Hal gig was my first away gig as a wide-eyed 16yo with a bunch of lads from Cov and London. In the footage I have, I can see myself skanking away on stage at the end when the stage collapses. A good mate of mine who went on to be the stage manager at the Town & Country in Kentish Town (before it was taken over and renamed The Forum) managed to obtain a VHS copy of the full TV master tape from the Dutch TV company. I wonder what happened to that - I only have a copy of the edited broadcast version. What a weekend!
