He also mentioned Lynval Busses and beggared up the intro to Do Nothing. I doubt there is anything new.

um... John, Paul & George all wrote songs so maybe The Beatles could be described as "a band full of songwriters". But a good 85% of the original songs by The Specials were written and arranged and co produced by Jerry Dammers.
In songs like Blank Expression, Nite Klub, Dawning of a New Era and Too Much Too Young he was talking about his own experiences of growing up in Coventry. Later he would write songs about being a pop star on tour and things falling apart (e.g International Jet Set) and then he wrote songs about the world he saw around him e.g Ghost Town, Nelson Mandela etc
It's true that Terry had great success with pop classics like Our Lips Are Sealed but Jane Wiedlin of the Go Gos wrote the tune, Nicky Holland did all the arrangements and then Dave Byrne produced and mixed it. Terry can write great lyrics and Horace and Brad are great at playing the bass and drums etc but they're not really a band of "songwriters". Aside from Jerry the only member of the band to come up with complete songs unassisted is Roddy.

Well ok but on their own or together, they have all contributed to new original music and its surprising they haven't been itching to create new music together again.
Even some new covers would be pretty good, i'd love to see Terry doing "Pressure drop" or even some of the Specials2 stuff.

I totally agree with this, i'm not concerned at all about the lack of new material.

I agree with most of that, I feel lucky i saw Madness at the opening comeback gig in 92 because you got all the classics and they sounded fresh.

I am a big fan of Madness and love the guys in the band as like most of us i grew up with them, but the newer music doesn't appeal to me at all.

I know they have felt for a long time they weren't given the credit they were due as they were not seen as a serious band and it seems to me they have dropped the fun element of their music in order to be taken more seriously.

But i guess like most bands they had to change in some ways in order to carry on.

I don't know how long The Specials can carry on without some changes to the set or why they would want to keep doing the same material.
