If this is true it is the best news I've had since the Specials got back together.

Heard Paul Cleary was excellent at the Philip Chevron Testimonial Night in the Olympia a few weeks back.

Any excuse to play Downmarket ...

This song is a snapshot of 1980's Dublin ...

Joseph O'Connor (brother of Sinead of course) wrote this amazing, funny and beautifully poignant poem for Philip Chevron ... have to say I was really shocked and saddened to see the photo of Philip at the end of the link.

I wasn't really a fan or the band at the time but I've always liked Downmarket and The Bride Wore White, I've been listening to some of their radio sessions and live stuff for a while now and I really like it Smile

Young Gifted And Black is their only Ska song and It's an absolutely Amazing live (they will be ripping out the seats if they play this one live in December) Smile

If you could imagine The Jam with Dexys brass section playing Ska & Reggae it could only be The Blades Smile

I can seriously hear The Jam here - Walk Back Renee (Session, 1980)

http://fanningsessions.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/the-blades-walk-back-renee-1980.mp3

Bruce Foxton could sing this one - Breaking Out Of The Ruts (Session, 1980)

http://fanningsessions.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/the-blades-breaking-out-of-the-ruts-1980.mp3

The Blades - Live at the SFX 1985 (Where I saw The Beat and Madness in the 80's)

Last Man In Europe
Mayday
Real Emotion
If I Go Away
Revelations of Heartbreak
Boy One
Time Waits For No Man
Too Late
Our Secret Dream
Hot for You
Downmarket
Those were the days
Not So Blue
Young, Gifted and Black
Ghost Of A Chance
Last Man In Europe
Downmarket

The Blades - Live at RTE Studios (Brilliant Gig)

Revelations Of Heartbreak
My Girl
Downmarket
The Time Tunnel
Those Were The Days
I Heard A Cry
Not So Blue (aka Memory Lane)
Same Old Song
Young Gifted And Black (I wish this was released as a single in 1979)

Thanks

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself "jodo1979" I didn't make it to the gig because I left it too late to buy tickets and I didn't want to risk buying them outside. but I will definitely go next time after watching that performance, brilliant Brass sound, keyboards and Paul's voice hasn't changed.

I didn't think they would play Young Gifted & Black as It's only a cover version and wasn't recorded so I will look forward to hearing that again.

They will play again just like The Specials did and many other bands who have reformed over the years and if they don't then I missed a couple of good nights at The Olympia.

Anyway I'm glad I got to check them out on video so I will know what to expect at the next Gig, if their is one? Smile

Glad you enjoyed them Sugarman. It was class show from start to finish. They have some really great songs. And apart from Young Gifted & Black there was 2 other covers I think. They done The Temptations My Girl and a blistering version of Heatwave by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Paul did say towards the end that he could see them doing this again so you have a good chance to see them again I would imagine. Very Happy

Thanks

for letting me know what Paul said at the end about seeing them again, I had a gut feeling it wouldn't be a one off after a performance like that Smile

I can still imagine Young Gifted & Black being on 2 Tone if Jerry had expanded the label to other countries at the time, those keyboards remind me of Desmond Brown when he was in The Selecter and the brass sound remind me of Dexys.

their is a thread on this forum about what's underrated and what's overrated and The Blades are without a shadow of a doubt underrated. and if I'm starting to overate them now so be it Smile

Usually the live video recordings on Youtube are shaky with poor sound but these are perfect in every way Very Happy

Happy Christmas
