I'm really surprised to hear that More Specials has been the favoured album, but I guess I shouldn't base things on my own opinions. It was good that they moved on from the first album. Brilliant as the first album was, it would have been all too easy to just stick with the same format. Fortunately they didn't just do that and came out with such a different sound. Both albums still sound as good today as they ever did and surely no band has ever released as good a debut album as The Specials?

It's flipped for me. A few years back I would have said Specials. Now it is More Specials. Specials production is horrendous.

Hey Little Rich Girl, Do Nothing and I Just Cant Stand It are pure class.

The Specials completed a wildly successful American tour in 2013, performing to sold-out crowds at Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver.

For me, definitely Specials because it was love at first hearing. Its raw energy, urgency, pulsating rhythm and iconic cover are a landmark in musical history and a milestone in my personal journey of musical discovery. However, later I learned to love More Specials, especially after hearing some impressive live versions of songs like Stereotype and Man at C&A.

I've never got when the production of the first album gets 'panned' (little mixing desk related pun there, hur hur hur... )

What specifically didn't Elvis Costello get right?

Compared to the live recordings of the same tracks, during the same period in which the first album was being recorded, Elvis Costello got just about everything wrong. A Message to you Rudy and You’re Wondering Now hit the mark, but tracks like Concrete Jungle and Do the Dog have nowhere near the punch that they should have had.

Great songs. Great album. Shite production.

We had those truck size stereo systems still, so it sounded good at minimum attenuation.

The Specials gave a remarkable show in America filling all the venues; Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver twice as the first time they came here. Saw MK2 and have no complaints.

Live recordings are always going to pack more of a punch. But when I hear something like Nite Klub on the first album, I think it's spot on, sound wise.

The spirit is there. I know at the time I wasn't even aware that the production was an issue. The only band who didn't sound strong was The Bodysnatchers but they'd hardly played.
