Why are there no great new bands anymore? no great new songs?
Its almost eary how there are no great rock bands or singers anymore, god even Country music has got worse.
Has this once great music nation lost it? |

With a lot of my favourite bands there seemed to be a kind of chemistry.
Norman Watt Roy is an amazing bass player and the blockheads are all great if they had Mick Hucknel as their singer it would have been terrible. But Ian Dury + Blockheads = perfection.
Jerry + Nev + Rico + Roddy is very exciting
Morrissey + Marr works well.
David Bowie needed the classically trained Mick Ronson.
Lou Reed needed the more original John Cale.
There was an interview with Chris Difford recently in which he said Squeeze were forced to play live all the time and knock out album after album that there wasn't time to think. All that has changed really. I can't imagine a band doing what The Beatles did and go to Germany and do 3 sets a day get tight as a group and then release 2 albums, a single and a film every year. There was a time in the American charts when The Beatles were number 1,2,3,4,5
- I can't imagine a new band doing that. If Elvis Costello was to start now he wouldn't be touring with Stiff and competing with Ian Dury etc he'd just work on his own using computers and be putting stuff out of band camp, pissing in the wind. _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

They're out there but you're unlikely to hear them on British mainstream radio and television.
The few labels that are left are more about the instant hit than allowing artists to develop. Young singers are brainwashed to think if they don't win Simon Cowell's freak show, their game is up. (In some cases, they didn't have much of a 'game' in the first place! )
Not much good coming out of Jamaica either. Certainly nothing in comparison with the music that emerged from there in the two decades or so after the island's independence, which influenced so much in the music world. |

Great post...
Serendipity plays a huge part in music and in band formation...as does hard graft... |

I know they arnt new,but ive only just discovered the rifles. Heard their latest album, loved it and worked backwards, have them all now. I cannot see why they arnt doing great things in the charts. Great band, but ignored by the mainstream. _________________ The past is our knowledge, the present our mistake and the future we always leave too late. |

Yes, it is about chemistry and sometimes things work together when on paper they 'shouldn't' and the serendipity is of course important, as loughers said.
I'm going to mention The Beat as a great example of all those things, looking at how they originally came together, their diverse influences and the way they blended them. |

The Beat stood the test of time, all of their albums are timeless and well produced
Roger and Dave formed general Public after The Beat split in 1983 but The Beat sound continued on when Andy Cox and David Steele formed Fine Young Cannibals in 1985, their first album sounds more like a Beat album than General Public's All The Rage, I love both albums but the real winner is Fine Young Cannibals, and even that album sounds as fresh as ever. I wish I could say the same about general public's first? _________________ I'm having bags of fun |

Yeah, but aside from Neoliberalism, commodification, commercialization, merchandization, playlistization and sentimentalization.

For one thing, the emphasis is more than ever on solo artist 'brands', usually with a team of 'professional songwriters', big name producers and hired mercenaries (I mean 'session musicians'). Not forgetting their own clothing lines.
They sometimes do live gigs, as long as they've got either a stage to lip sync on or the right microphone to erase their wrong notes. |

The exhibition Return of the Rudeboy opened last night. According to the London Evening Standard Don Letts was there with Pauline Black and was despairing at how dull the youth of today are...
