That's just not on Jett. I have the single which came free with More Specials. Its a great song and should have been included. I can't think of any reason for not including it. |

There's a compilation CD that you can still buy that has every single B Side and instrumental ("Stereotypes As and Bs"). When it came out Jerry said in an interview with Uncut that he wasn't happy with the compilation. In his view it was too "trainspotter like" to be so completest. This time round he got to have a say in the design and tracklisting. I would have liked it if he'd including the Costello version of Nelson Mandela that was performed on The Tube - but I was pleased to see it get so many rave reviews.
Most agree that some of Roddy's tunes and lyrics are up there with the band's best moments but "Bragging and Trying" was never a stage favourite, a fan's favourite, a critic's favourite. To me the song seems to be the opposite of what the band were about.
On Facebook someone complained about the new photos (which I think are great). I guess you can never please all the Specials fans all of the time. _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

I've always loved the song. The fact that it doesn't fit with anything else the band recorded is what makes it a perfect Specials track.
Another slice of unpredictable magic. |

It was a strange omission ... if it warranted being a Bonus Track first time around then I can't see why it should not have been included now.
Would be very sad to think that this was a personal issue on Jerry's behalf.
I think "churlish" was the word Mojo used describing it being left out in their review.
Had to look it up and it says "rude in a mean-spirited and surly way". |

I think it's just indicative of how little thought went into these releases.
I'm also suprised that no one has mentioned that the b-sides of Jungle Music aren't on the In the Studio re-hash. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

But what is it you love about the actual song?
Are there any lyrics you like, does the tune grab you, do you think it's sung well, do you think it's an interesting idea for a song?
When you say "unpredictable magic" it sounds like you're talking about something by Kraftwerk, Sun Ra, or Brian Eno.
In 1981 there seemed to be dozens of acts like Dave Edmonds, Stray Cats, Status Quo, Alvin Stardust,Match Box, Rocky & The Replays, Amazing Darts, Shakin Stevens etc etc "Bragging and Trying Not To Lie" sounds like a rough demo for a band of that ilk. If you ran a record label and got sent that tape on a song would you sign them up? _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

i think its a great little song
as for it non inclusion..that was stupid, especially as a live version of your wondering now is on it, and that should have been on the 1st albums track list..
in fact these rereleases are not all that intresting to me personally..
just buy stereotypical a/bs, that was a top release..
considering the mysterous apperance of rat race dub and sock jb dub,
i get the feeling jerrys hanging on to some unreleased stuff, for his pension. what happened to the special aka rumoured track female chavinist pig.
but braggin should have been on that cd. and if anyone bumps into jerry, they should ask him why it isnt.. _________________ www.soundcloud.com/theatreofghosts

Does anyone know exactly how much he was involved with these releases? Were they something the record company put together and then passed on to him for his approval or was he involved during the entire process?
Either way they are a major disappointment. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

It was part of a free single given away with the original More Specials and should have been included. |

I think all Roddys songs should be dropped
Concrete Jungle, Rat Race , Hey Little Rich Girl , Holiday Forthnight
none of them are as good as Jerry Dammers songs |

I think The Specials should have done 'Why Argue With Fate' as part of the setlist. They should also have done Friday Night Saturday Morning they way Terry says it was intended, with just vocal and piano - given that Jerry changed those songs to suit his vision.
I love Braggin' - always have done since I first heard it - but is there any chance you could post the lyrics somewhere Roddy - I can work out most of it, but there are bits that are just beyond me no matter how often I listen to it

Hmm, it is not the only glaring slight at Roddy's contributions... has anyone noticed that his guitar credit on Racist Friend has vanished on the deluxe CD version of In The Studio... not nice methinks !!!! |

Do they list all the many musicians who contributed to one or two tracks on In The Studio?
I know that on the original album that came out in the 1980s every single person is listed. When the CD version came out they mentioned the 8 band members, 4 singers and a sax player. It doesn't mention that Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger sing on Nelson Mandela or that Elvis Costello produced it or Paul Speare played the tin whistle etc etc. It's misleading to imply Roddy alone has been written out of the picture because of a vendetta.
Jerry's main involvement seems to have been to have got Chalkie Davies to dig out never seen before photos of the band inc Roddy but no one wants to talk about that.
On the first Specialized double CD there are covers of pretty much everything but there's no Bragging and Trying Not To Lie - do Roddy obsessives believe Paul Willo is part of some evil conspiracy too? What dark deeds hide behind "Bragging" being dropped by the compilers of The Specialized CD _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |
