Saw The Specials for the first time on the first comeback tour and so glad I did, I always thought as soon as they lose another original member I wouldn't bother anymore and now there's only 3 left surely its the end? |

Kevin Rowland is continuing to get good reviews and attention with "Dexys" with his new Irish themed covers album. No one in the press asks "Where's Big Jim Patterson and Pete Williams? And Why isn't Mick Talbot the musical director anymore?"
Dexys has become a brand rather than a band - I think it was good that Kevin drew a line and said: we're not Dexy's Midnight Runners, we're "Dexys" _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

As someone who has just received his copy of said new 'Dexys' album I'm not surprised he's getting attention but it's is a hard listen. The best track is the opening 'Women of Ireland' as Kevin has little part to play in it and it has some mighty fine violin playing from Helen O'Hara.
There are one or two other moments that are not as bad as they could have been but for a band who were essential 30 odd years ago this is brutal. Sad to say...

Beyond 'Searching for the Young Soul Rebels', will someone please explain the attraction of Dexy's? I just don't get it. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

One Day I'm Going to Soar was a fantastic comeback album with mostly great songs. Anyone who saw the accompanying live show raved about it (including me).
My heart sank when I saw the new album was going to be a load of Irish covers, most of those songs I didn't like first time round when my Old Da and his mates were singing them in the kitchen after a feed of Guinness.
So much of Dexy's charm is wrapped up in Kevin's personality, which is a bit Marmite, love him or hate him. I find him charismatic and passionate about his music, a really interesting character and a throwback to the time before pop stars were manufactured and styled to an inch of their lives... |

Dexy's midnight runners 1980 were not the same DMR in 1982 and so on, Bands like Madness,The Specials and many others had members who all had an important input to make the band what they were. |

Kevin Rowland is no doubt an interesting character. It's just the unbelievably dull and bland music he makes I just don't get.
As for Dexy's new album.... Sometimes I wish I could un-hear certain music.
What sort of accent is he aiming for????? _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

I really like the new Dexys album, the only songs I don't like are You Wear It Well and How Do I Live.
Grazing In The Grass and Both Sides Now are top tunes featuring Big Jim Patterson
Dexys never had the same band line up from day one, with the exception of Big Jim Patterson who has played on every album to date.
Pete Williams, Mick Talbot and Helen O'Hara have returned to Dexys at different times through their career past and present, maybe Kevin Archer will be involved with the next album who know's? _________________ I'm having bags of fun |

ah, ok I stand corrected a bit there - I didn't realise Jim Patterson played on the new Dexy's record. Good to see Helen returning too.
I doubt Kevin "Al" Archer will return but maybe Billy Adams will at some point.
It will be interesting to see who Terry & co get in to help with the new songs _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

Searching was a fantastic album but for me the combination of the horns and fiddles on Too Rye Ay is almost perfect - the weakest track being the cover version of Jackie Wilson Said. It was one of my favourite albums when I bought and it sill is today.
Their music just isn't exciting any more.
Harry I think the door is now firmly shut re The Specials releasing anything new irrespective of who they bring in - although they could approach someone like Tim Armstrong as he seems able to knock out songs every week!!

Sounds a bit like the lyric in Geno about "Now you're all over and you sound so tame" _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

Couldn't have put it better Harry, now Madness on the other hand...
