It reminds me of the music for Stereotype extended, if it was a touch slower. Also I think that sound that became known as 'exotica' was being done by the Cubans before Martin Denny and Les Baxter. _________________ "How can I be anybody else? I don't try, I've got no reason."

Can you hear them crying in the rubble of Beirut?

And I thought I'd throw this in
McCOY TYNER: I used to practice every day. I couldn't wait to come home from school... I couldn't wait because the music became a very very important part of my life. My mother loved pianos, she was a beautician and she took me to somebody's house where they had a piano. She never studied herself, but she liked the piano. So maybe I took that from her. My father liked music, he liked singing in the church. But my mother liked the piano a lot, so when I became interested she said I could take lessons and I said well...fine! _________________ There's still nothing wrong with it!
I have a copy of The Face from 1984 somewhere, just after the release of In The Studio. Jerry mentions Miles, Art Blakey and Dave Brubeck as people he'd been listening to.
Speculating on those influences: Dave Brubeck's 'Time Out' has a couple of tracks influenced by what he heard touring in North Africa and Arab nations, where some of the traditional music is in a completely different time signature to Western music. Housebound is another In The Studio song in one of those middle eastern time signatures (Turkish) - Brubeck's track Blue Rondo A La Turk may have been the inspiration.
Speaking of which, there's an album by an Egyptian composer called Soliman Gamil which uses lots of ancient instruments associated with Egypt's history. Gamil had been writing music for films since the early sixties. This one reminds me of War Crimes:

McCoy Tyner I believe also learnt directly from Bud Powell early on, as did Alice Coltrane. _________________ "How can I be anybody else? I don't try, I've got no reason."
George Moxey is a little-known Jamaican organist. Here he's playing alongside Ernest Ranglin. A prototype of the More Specials/In The Studio sound, with the 'exotica' influence.

Marcus Belgrave played in Ray Charles' band for many years, and taught many other great musicians.
