So there's to be a new album from (what's left of) The Specials....
So, should we celebrate this or do you think that we should just enjoy the legacy that was?

This is enough to chill anyone to the bone. The standard was set with 'Specials' and 'More Specials'. Good luck in trying to match those.
Think of some of the shit that has been releasd under the name 'The Specials' . Todays Specials and Skinhead Girl to name two. Even Gulity... struggled under the name. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

I quite like Guilty Til Proven Innocent, and would be happy if this new album reached that standard.
Will be interesting to see what they come up with and what genre/ style it takes.
Probably better if we just forget about Todays Specials. _________________ Bernie Rhodes Knows - Dont Argue |

I'm intrigued. Nice to see them doing something new, and hopefully it will be new songs rather than covers. |

I don't think they (three of them) would ever be able to re-create "Specials" and "More Specials" but I would hope that they write songs in the same vein and spirit.
Many of the issues that were relevant back then are still as relevant today. _________________ I got one art "O" level, it did nothing for me !! |

If the new album is anything like Waiting or The Hour of Two Lights it should be great though I'm not expecting the new album to be as Ska as the 2 Tone albums? _________________ I'm having bags of fun |

Id be a lot more interested if Dammers had been on board. But thats never likely with Terry running the show. Interesting, but 9 years too late, would have been great back in 2009 when at least 6 of the group were together. _________________ The past is our knowledge, the present our mistake and the future we always leave too late. |

Individuals can be replaced to a degree (although I wish they didn't have to be) Jerry on keyboards, Brad on drums, Roddy on guitar, but I think Nev is irreplaceable for his toasting - and the current members would struggle to generate the energy he gave in any new material.
Because of this, I think the new stuff is likely to be slower and less energetic than the 'old' stuff which still sounds fresh today. _________________ Bernie Rhodes Knows - Dont Argue |

Jerry Dammers was The Specials. Yes, they were the sum of their very brilliant parts, but it was he who assembled the band and it was he who the vision and drive to make them sound like they did. He is not called The General for nothing. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

I agree with that, but at the point of reformation the remaining members plus Nik were able to reproduce the sound of The Specials (obviously without any new material), but after Neville left I went to one more gig and felt the energy had gone, and they haven't replaced him, Lynval does a bit more of the toasting that Neville did - but his voice isn't as powerful, and he hasn't got the same stage presence as Neville - partly because it isn't as easy to move around a stage while playing a guitar.
It will be interesting to see what the studio sound of the new Specials is, without Jerry's input it is likely to be very different.
I wonder if Steve Cradock will be involved in the song writing? _________________ Bernie Rhodes Knows - Dont Argue |

Dammers’ view of the re-union was the band should carry on where they left off. It is obvious that the rest of the band just wanted to go through the motions of being their own tribute act. Hats off to Roddy and Neville for realising that there is only so far you can travel on the bands past reputation _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

Ideally it'd be great to see the original members all back together to record new music. But maybe it's better to accept people have moved on. Look at the struggle that went on with recording More Specials and Ghost Town. It's safe to say those musical differences are still there. |

They say the best things come to those who wait and it's been a long time since Terry put out a record.
I imagine the new album will sound a lot more like a Pama International project crossed with Terry's Vegas album than it will sound like the debut Specials album or More Specials because no one can replace Nev/Rod/Jerry/Rico etc.
But like, Sugarman I loved 'Waiting' and 'Virgins & Philistines'. I know Terry has had his health problems but he's had over three decades to come up with some good lyrics so I'm keeping my fingers crossed _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

The new album may sounds like many things, but one thing won't sound like is a Specials album. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.
