A classic standout album track (yes, I know it was also released as a double A side single). Where's the equivalent on 'Encore'?

Well... I personally don't think that there are any new songs on Encore as good as Nite Klub.
That said, the cover of All The Time In The World is great and this live version of Nite Klub (as with all the other footage from that 100 Club show) are both pretty good.

Terry and Lynval can still sing as well as they could. The album also features some great bass playing by Horace and some great trombone from Tim Smart.
And they kept Busted off the number one spot - so there are some reasons to be cheerful

Yes but it doesn't feature any great songs.

There's some good, relevant lyrics but there's no attitude, no strength or power behind the words and music.

Its like grumpy old (re. angry young men) men singing.... which is exactly what it is I guess... Cool Cool

I've said it before but they really miss Roddy's guitar and punk attitude.

There was always certain amount of spite, cynicism and sarcasm in The Specials (mostly Dammers') lyrics which is simply not there within Encore. The very fact that they are all grumpy old men you would have thought that this would still be the case, but no, nothing is on offer.

The band were always the sum of their parts and when major components, such as Roddy's attitude and Nev's vocals are missing then all that is left is a pale imitation of the real thing.

Most obvious thing is most people just mellow with age. I'll just throw this into the pot.

Only guessing here but perhaps they simply realise that some things can't be changed simply by singing at them - certainly the case with the hidebound world of politics - and the message is to make the best of life in spite of who's in control.

Another thing is Jerry set the band's political agenda and a good deal of the angst in the lyrics came from him. Plus you factor in how his father was also a social activist so he was following in his footsteps. Not that the rest of the band weren't politically minded but he obviously had it to a greater degree.

Then again... if you look at so many protest musics - reggae, punk, hip hop (for a while) - a lot of it was saying things that did need to be said. But how much long-term effect does it have, that anger? When you look at the societies each one of those music came out of, it's as though they never existed.

"Aggressive music can only shock you once. Afterwards its impact declines. It's inevitable." - Brian Eno

"the little you can expect to get
to get from anyone else
makes you look after number one
the only helping hand
you'll ever be offered
is the one at the end of your own arm" - 'The Limits We Set'
