They probably should have tweaked the lyrics a bit so it became a song about

Their first two albums were very good. It all went downhill when Sting started to take himself way too seriously. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

The Police were my first real love in music, and then I heard 'Gangsters' on the radio and everything changed.
I agree with Trojan about the first two albums, and some of their album tracks are better than a lot of the singles to me, showing a sometimes darker and more comical side to them. _________________ Bernie Rhodes Knows - Dont Argue |

Stewart Copeland says some interesting things to Elvis Costello about The Clash and who influence who etc.
The first concert I ever saw was the Artists Against Apartheid show organised by Jerry Dammers that featured both Sting and Costello. I remember Costello saying in an interview with the NME that at that concert Sting had tried to be chummy with him but that he was having none of it.
Years went by until Costello finally became mates with Sting (he was the support act on their massive reunion tour). Costello admitted he'd been jealous of the sales the Police had _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

Ghost Town is very much a studio track. I have yet to hear a live version of it which doesn't sound like a complete racket. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

True - Ghost Town is a studio track but I thought bits of that Costello cover were exciting.
I like the idea of Costello and Dammers collaborating in some way again - maybe they could do some live shows together? _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

apologies for sound quality but i like this one, especially after 3 minutes- crowd reaction to Rico, Jerry's keyboards and Brad's 5 bass drum beats in a row around 4;33 - https://youtu.be/46D-K8d5sbg _________________ Naked from your bath, you go naked to your bed, but i cant stop the hatred running through my...... f * * k i n g .. head. |

The first two are the strongest but I like all the albums except Synchronicity, which does contain some great songs (especially the title track) but felt more leaning towards American rock stations.
Sting as it's well known was a huge Beat fan, and was as much an admirer of the political side of their songs as the sound. Apparently Miles Copeland forbade Sting to do political-themed songs at first, and he used to bemoan this with Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger when the two bands toured together.
I think by Ghost In The Machine that must have changed. |

Given Miles Copelands father was in the CIA I'm not surprised he didn't want to be involved with any left leaning bands. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

Yes, I liked that one too.
I'd like a CD/DVD of the original specials live. It's the personalities and input of all the characters involved that makes it exciting. The Specials used to be about breaking new ground with every release _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

Though he kept managing Sting as a solo artist, when he was much more politicised. Perhaps the commission was too good to resist.
Miles Copeland was openly against Red Wedge and for a long time I didn't get it. But given that many of those communist dictatorships in Europe collapsed not long after, in hindsight perhaps he had a point. Which isn't to say the CIA and their ilk were the answer, either. |

Probably the best version of Ghost Town from 1981 in terms of quality is from Pier 84 New York recording. For a band on the verge of imploding they sounded remarkable coherent. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

Where would one avail of said recording? There was a previous discussion on here about this recording but the link doesnt exist. _________________ Naked from your bath, you go naked to your bed, but i cant stop the hatred running through my...... f * * k i n g .. head. |
