My Dad used to play Dizzy Gillespie records when I was little and dance about the living room. Poor Joe always makes me smile

Some of Morrissey's lyrics were very funny
(e.g. "So I broke into the Palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said: "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said: "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano")

and Johnny Marr's guitar tended to be happy sounding

Did you see the cartoon of Snoopy that featured Smiths lyrics?

- your post reminds me of this -

"Smokey Robinson’s Tears of a Clown that epitomised what Roger characterised as the band’s “happy music with sad lyrics”.
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/mar/27/ranking-roger-obituary-roger-charlery
So I join in your wierdness too!

Johnny Marr again, I think.

We are such a melancholy race it's good, the opposite of cocky.
What woman doesn't want a new tattoo and a pint of beer as a tribute : )

I like a bit of Billy Bragg every now and then. Bill Bailey's cheeky tribute is quite funny...

I remember buying the Skinhead 7s box set and playing each of the singles in turn. When I put on the instrumental Tea House, I was insanely happy. There is just something about hearing a song for the first time and falling in love with it instantly but there's something special about some instrumentals that just cheer you up like Tea House, Decimal Currency and Liquidator.

Non instrumental choice is Feel Like Jumping.

Or non ska - the Breeders with Cannonball.

And I too love so many of The Smiths lyrics. This one is not funny but just so true: "Hang the blessed DJ, because the music that they constantly play, it says nothing to me about my life".

Harry

Iove Poor Joe and your recent posts on films and music - perfect antidote to lockdown.

Thought of another tune - Dubliners playing Seven Drunken Nights.

Cool. If you like Poor Joe you'll love Don't Try To Keep Up With The Jones's. They go into a crazy human beatbox bit at the end.

Yeah - Ronnie Drew was a walking reason to be cheerful. The Dubliners and Pogues version of Irish Rover cheers me up

This cheers me up always, because I 'may' have done it once or twice Embarassed
It used to be easier with a rotary dial and no reading glasses!

I remember reading an interview (around the time of In The Studio) in which Jerry said how hard it was to write happy songs.
I love this Nick Lowe song (Somebody Care For Me) - it's so happy and features a lovely organ solo...
