hi, i was listening to the first specials album the other day and noticed how complexed and amazing john bradburys drumming was. i have never heard a drum beat so twisted like on too much too young.

so i was thinking, does brad deserve to get the best drummer ever award if there was such a thing????

Cool

Absolutely - Brad was one of the reasons that Special beat were so good and Today's Specials were (let's say) not so good/

I don't think Brad would accept a "best drummer ever award". Going on his playing and love of soul, he would probably rate a few drummers above himself.

I do think though that a bands (or labels) sound is built on the drummer. And Brad definitely made The Specials sound what it is. Take him away... and you wouldn't have The Specials.

Just like Al Jackson for Booker T/Stax, Benny Benjamin for Motown, Lloyd Knibbs for The Skatalites/Studio One, Brad should be held up there as having a unique style that shaped a fantastic sound that has stood the test of time.

One of the greats for sure.

I adore Brad.
But as for best drummer ever, Keith Moon will always be number 1 for me.

Good rhythm. Still has to adjust his kit midway through like any standard drummer & never misses a beat Very Happy

Not sure if Brad is the best drummer ever, but definitely my biggest influence. Although I'd never played along to his drumming until recently I'd certainly got the style of his fills and accents down pat. Must be odd for the guitarists in Kifaru trying to play reggae & your drummer is throwing out ska beats all over the place Laughing

Brad's a great drummer and a proper dude when he's behind a drum kit, but as much as I adore the Specials, I couldnt quite say best ever!

For sheer ability and as obvious as he is, I'd go Dave Grohl (and I'm not even a big Foo Fighters fan). For impact on popular music you couldnt have a best drummer discussion without mentioning Keith Moon.

Stephen Morris is fucking brilliant too. He's right up there. Check out the Peel Sessions stuff the JD did - even though it's some of the earliest stuff he recorded that's absolutely amongst the best example of his work (and I think the Peel version of Love Will Tear Us Apart towers overs the more famous single version). And whilst not specificially relating to his drumming, Morris (with wife Gillian) basically wrote the whole of the Technique LP (whilst Barney and Hooky were off getting e'd up and pissed in various Ibiza watering holes).

I'll tell you who else I used to think was excellent - and I've no fucking idea what his name - the guy from Ride was bloody good too.

(And this will set the cat amogst the pigeons) Stewart Copeland was a bloody good drummer.

Actually for all hes a 5 Star Arsewipe, Stuart Copeland is renowned for being one of the Best drummers of our time.

Gotta love Brads Playin like, just the style, hes very unique, and not many drummers are.

Dave Grohl is a very busy man, but tbh, i dont think hes any better or worse than alot of other drummers out there, got to respect his ability to switch like.

Hes a one man band.... no body knows etc......
