it is a very interesting lyric i love it- i have always assumed that it means this.

1. You see that i have caught up with you and you know your tricks (whatever they may be) are about to stop.
2. You are terrified i'm going to do something.....and dont know what it is.....
3. that is enough for me i'll leave you to stew forever.

the fact that you dont know what fate awaits will haunt you forever and that is my revenge.

The fact that we the songs listeners don't know what the tension between the singer and the sung to is about. gives it a terrific universality- is it a cheating girl?, a rival gangster?, a fading colonial power?

The singer has a slight menace but is none the less sad that it has come to this. Crying or Very sad

sorry have i over analysed this? i love a good lyric me!

I always thought it was about some rude boy who's about to die and waiting his "final judgement", for the way he misbehaved. Naive ?? Confused

For 30 years I misheard it as "Britain has fallen" instead of "Curtain has fallen.

So i thought it was a poignant commentary on the fall of the British Empire.

And the "knock knock knock - you cant come in" at the intro I thought was something to do with banning immigration.

Makes sense in my little brain??

i thought it was that till i came on here, then i thought oh how stupid for thinking that. then the other week it was on in the background and i heard them say that, once during the record i'm almost sure, can anyone verify this not by printing lyrics but by listemning to the song....
i sang it as that to myself -strange we should all think it

Time to move on instead of swaddling yourself in gridlocked familiarity?

SNAP! Yes. I used to have very similar thoughts.
I suppose it's the sign of a good song if it gets you doing the thinking.
Watch Your Step had a similar impact on me

It's got to be a break up song with "You're wondering now" - like "Now you have made your bed, you can lie in It" - or "I told you so"

R.E.M. were talking about "Losing my religion" and Michael Stipe described that where they are from It means "I am at the end of my rope" - so that always makes me think of expressions local to the writers country? - what does "You're wondering now" mean where the songs writers are from?

"Curtains" means It's over. "Pay"- "What goes around comes around" "Knock knock" - don't drag your sorry arse back here for another try I hate you eat shit and die. Shocked

Obviously - I never have many thoughts about song lyrics. Confused

Yeah, I think it's a very straight forward song like Cry Cry Cry by Johnny Cash.
Obviously the guy is saying - you pushed me too far. The show is now over. He's not nasty enough to be saying "you're going to cry" he's just saying: you'll be left full of doubts.

I think Jerry thought a lot about what song followed what.
When Lou Reed released his New York album lots of people took the piss because there was a note on the back saying something like "this album was written like a play or a film and will sound better if you listen to all the songs the way I intended them to be". It was unwise of Lou to tell the listner what to do once they'd paid for the thing but I think many songwriters sceretly feel the same as him
