Nice one chaps... Cool

DerDUDE:
How did you come up with your band name? Does it have a background??
The Rough Kutz:
I think Rat suggested it and we didn't come up with anything better plus it relates to the Jamaican music scene that we all follow.

DerDUDE:
How would you specify your style as a ska band?
The Rough Kutz:
Streetwise lyrics musically influenced by 2 tone, punk skinhead reggae & soul

DerDUDE:
Which song would you suggest someone to listen to in order to get to know your music best?
The Rough Kutz:
Probably Chell Heath or Him a Rude Boy

DerDUDE:
Which ska band/personality influenced you the most?
The Rough Kutz:
Definitely The Specials & the 2 Tone bands

DerDUDE:
Apart from ska, what music style influenced you the most?
The Rough Kutz:
Punk & Northern Soul

DerDUDE:
What message are you trying to get across to people with your music?
The Rough Kutz:
No message really we just write about things that affect us or have happened to us.

DerDUDE:
Does ska have a political meaning for you, and if so what is it?
The Rough Kutz:
No not really it's more about dancing and the feel good factor for us plus collecting as many of the original Jamaican recordings as we can to hear those sweet vocals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Concerts:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DerDUDE:
What were the best and worst venues you've played?
The Rough Kutz:
The best gig we played was a festival in Belgium, the worst was a gig in Stoke when the Pa blew up after our 2nd song.

DerDUDE:
How would you describe your audience?
The Rough Kutz:
A mix of Skinheads, scooterboys, punks, skater kids & general Ska fans

DerDUDE:
Which song do you usually play as an encore?
The Rough Kutz:
Fistful of Ska

DerDUDE:
Have you got any weird touring experiences worth a mention?
The Rough Kutz:
I once saw Porky our old manager eat a full basket of boiled eggs in a bar in Amsterdam, we also broke one of our old singers out of a mental institution and took him on tour with us.

DerDUDE:
Which band would you most like to play with?
The Rough Kutz:
We would have loved to have played with The Specials for the pure energy of their live set m& also The Skatalites who are musically brilliant

DerDUDE:
I've always been interested to know how you deal with Nazi-Skins at your gigs.
The Rough Kutz:
We don't get Nazi's at our gigs to our knowledge, in England Nazi's don't really attend Ska gigs they usually stick to the Oi! & Punk scene

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ska History:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DerDUDE:
There's a lot of talk about 3 ska waves. How far can you identify yourselves with those? What do you think is going to come after the 3rd wave? What's the future of ska?
The Rough Kutz:
The future of Ska in England is being hampered by the amount of sad Ska tribute bands that are popping up all over the place playing Specials & Madness covers, it leaves the young bands with less & less venues to play

DerDUDE:
Why do you think it is that most young bands either play traditional ska or ska-punk?
The Rough Kutz:
I think bands are just looking to try and create their own take on Ska, we still like to use the 2 tone sound as our main influence but try and vary our set to include some traditional stuff as well

DerDUDE:
Why do you think it's so difficult for ska to establish itself? Do you think ska is doomed to continue to play a minor role in the music scene?
The Rough Kutz:
I don't think Ska will ever be a major force in the charts again as the media and record bosses don't push it enough for it to get regular radio airplay

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DerDUDE:
Which band or ska CD do you recommend (apart from your own) to the people out there?
The Rough Kutz:
There are some great bands in the Uk at the minute like, Rebelation, The Splitters, Intensified, Too Hot, Smoke Like A Fish etc

DerDUDE:
Who, in your eyes is the "Godfather of Ska"?
The Rough Kutz:
Prince Buster

DerDUDE:
Which ska site do you particularly recommend? What are your favourites?
The Rough Kutz:
www.aboutska.com, www.thespecials.co.uk, www.theska.co.uk,

DerDUDE:
What's going to be coming up in terms of gigs or any other projects? Is there a new CD coming out?
The Rough Kutz:
We have a tour of Germany, Prague & Austria stating on May 24th, and have loads of gigs booked in England to promote our 3rd album which will be released on the tour, it's called ANOTHER WEEK ANOTHER WAR on Skanky Lil Records.

DerDUDE:
When is it going to be out and what should we be expecting?
The Rough Kutz:
Its out in May and features a guest appearance from Roddy from The Specials on guitar, and we think it is our best album to date.

DerDUDE:
A bit of space for your own comments and anything else you want to add!!!...
The Rough Kutz:
Thanks to Mark & Janine at Skanky Lil & Roddy Byers (top bloke) also thanks for all the emails of support6 from people around the world, keep it real smash the tribute bands

DerDUDE:
Thanks for the interesting interview! Skankin' greetings to england!

It's a bit old that interview, still good all the same. It'd be nice to hear their views on the rise (and fall) of the BNP in Stoke & The Potteries area.
