Madness played a set on Friday night that consisted one only one known track " House Of Fun" (obvious reasons) ,the rest being new tracks from the forthcoming album.

Jon Young,MIS stalwart commented;
"If Folgate was about granduer and well crafted
songs in a Kinks and English bands steeped
tradition looking through history too. This
new as yet untilted Madness album is Big Time
about pop music, All kinds, from the most upbeat
and catchy new Madness bouncers ive ever heard,
through themes harking back to motown, big ballads
and ages past of eras they love the music of. And
it's flowing with love songs too.
Early it's a worry that the crowd wont take this,
new songs set with so many here to party, but we
get a new spoken Chas intro, loud hailering from
off stage the heralded look behind the Madness
curtain, into the machine and the workings. It's
clearly explained what this is, and the band
are not dressed in suits, to mark this with
more casual look. Like it's a live rehearsal
room? Well maybe. But man they didnt seem
to need to crib off sheets much, apart from
Carl seated at a stool. It's only the
first song that fales starts. And despite
in band comments, and a lot of Woodys honest
admissions that he's play some things from
a box or he might need 2 goes, they all
perform like hard worked rehearsals have
paid off..".

Here's my take on it (with some of the facts lifted from what my properly honourable friend Jon said above) already posted elsewhere on this forum seems more appropriate here, so please indulge my copy and paste skills:
On Friday night Madness played 15 new songs (some of which have been previewed live over the last year or so) in what was effectively a paid rehearsal. No suits, loads of mucking about between songs including 'former' producer Clive Langer Running onstage to tell them that all of a sudden they sounded more Sam And Dave than Chas n Dave. Not sure if that was an insult.
Anyway, loads of good new stuff to listen out for with a few of them having hit written all over them, especially My Girl Number Two and Big Time Sister. Yep that's right, Mike Barson has written a second song called My Girl, apparently on the basis that the first one was a big hit, so he thought he'd have another go.
Death Of A Rude Boy is definitely one to look out for. Yes it carries a message similar to Message To You Rudy, but that message needs repeating. I really like it, but it is missing a tiny spark at the moment that would turn it from an also ran into a genuine contender.
They encored with House Of Fun.
Saturday night the hits returned, with three of the newbies, three off Norton Folgate and two off Dangermen Sessions, meaning the set is now at least 33% different to what they were doing 6 or 7 years ago. Not a bad turnover of songs for a band who are wrongly thought of purely as a nostalgia act.
As for Butlin's and the weekender I couldn't fault them. This was genuinely a Madness weekender, sold to people there to see Madness, see their mates, get drunk and have a great time. Red Coats were almost totally replaced by Madness T shirts with 'CREW' on them, so unless there were a few poor sods working who can't stand Madness, they simply blended in the fun and did so in great spirit.
The whole place, and I mean the whole place had been Madnessed up with bunting, decent quality canvas banners and the Madness eMblem on almost all the windows and doors in dining areas and various venues. Clichéd I know but it really did feel like a house of fun. Part of the fun of the weekend was nicking as much as possible of all this branding. I don't mean I nicked as much as I could (I did!) before anyone else could. I mean everyone seemed to be at it!
The accommodation was fine and the staff were great in sorting out some last minute needs. My only complaint is that the two cases of full frontal chalet curtain open wide nudity I saw were both blokes, but that's not down to Butlin's!
If Madness announced another one tomorrow I would book without hesitation.
I noticed late on that the first night was filmed professionally. I didn't notice any filming on the second night, but that's not to say it didn't go on. _________________ a tale of woe: a yahoo group for fans of Terry Hall and all his work.

I was at this weekender. It was a great. The album is going to be great and probably a couple of hits will come out of it.
I had the oppotunity to talk to a few of the band as well as Paul Heaton who was a class act and Craig Charles who done his Soul Show. Ian Dury's sons band were great too.
Sorry to say i wasn't keen on Jerry Dammer's DJ set even when Dennis Alcapone came on stage to do some toasting for him.
All in all a great weekend, and yes it was funny watching people nicking all the flags and bunting. Anyone on hear get the red Walts from the arch at the main entrance.

The album will be a hit, possibly number one. Depends which week of the year they release it.
There won't be any hit singles unless they get A listed at Radio 2 and some coverage on Global (Capital). On average a number one sells about 30,000 copies.
2500 copies will get you into the top 40.
I'm not sure Madness have the kind of fan base that will get a single record top ten.
I agree the album should do well.

On average a number one single sells 30,000 copies every two to three days.
2,500 copies will barely get you in the top 75.
This week's number one sold 66,941, raising its total sales to 601,132. It is the 12th single to sell over 600,000 copies this year. That was the second week in a row at number one for this single and its fifth in total.
The number 3 single this week only sold 59,461. This was disappointing for One Direction as their debut single had entered the charts on sales of 153,965 copies only 9 weeks ago. That was the highest weekly sale of any number one single this year.
The Saturdays entered the singles chart at 15 with 23,073 sales
Lady GaGa has a new entry at number 18 on 19,971 sales.
The Collective (for Children in Need) debuted at number 24 with 14,756 sales.

I subscribe to Music Week and UK Charts Plus. Both get their data from the OCC. Music Week and the OCC issue limited sales figures on a weekly basis. The year to date figures are astonishing. The total singles sold in 2009 was 128 million. In 2010 it was over 138 million. In 2011 that figure was surpassed in chart week 46. All the big weeks are still to come.
The higher sales figures are why I have been a big nay-sayer on the Facebook campaigns re Ghost Town and Gangsters.

The reason behind those recent chart placings? All the November ones are for the chart sales of the week including Halloween. This year's one was because that was the week iTunes launched its 59p singles promotion with around 250 tracks promoted on the front page.

I totally agree unless, as per my original post, they get A list support at Radio 2 and some support from Global.
The last couple of singles scraped around the B and C list at Radio 2. Their record purchasing fanbase has increased sufficiently since 2009 for them to lobby R2 for more airplay. If they get it with a first single in the spring they will have a chance of top 20.
