I was thinking about Dream Home in New Zealand yesterday, the whole idea of NZ being a safe haven from any potential nuclear war. Apparently the nation is now having to deal with a totalitarian lockdown far worse than the UK's.
But it struck me how clever that song is. They took a fairly mundane but recognisable image - the tv quiz shows that everyone used to watch - and gave it a twist by having the theme of the Cold War/nuclear paranoia. It's almost satire or black comedy, the kind of angle you might have seen on Not The Nine O' Clock News. Brilliant. |

Great post Imani.
It is brilliant and the lyrics could foreshadow The Salisbury Poisoning or the T.V. show with Mathew Rhys "The Americans"
I agree with a comment underneath the video on U.Tube.

"ska at its multilayered best!"
Does anyone know how this song came about? it's too precise to be random? _________________ marigold |

I know from previous interviews that many of the lyrics were a collective effort. Someone would begin with a set of ideas on a notebook, and it would be passed around the tour bus. Presumably edited and arranged later on.
When Wh'appen was released, Dave Wakeling and David Steele did an interview on Radio One where they spoke about the back story of a few tracks.
Dream Home is a bit like a follow-on from Stand Down Margaret.
This is probably the best write-up I've seen on Wiki. They really get the album.

Just a very well researched and insightful article and so well written.
- the best parts are always Roger's distinct and insightful comments.
Thank you Imani. _________________ marigold |
