Post subject: Suggs - That Close Reply with quote

Suggs autobiography due in October. Called That Close. The pulisher Quercus has a provisional website for the book. With a chance for you to win a signed copy and some madness music. Here... http://www.suggsthatclose.co.uk/

"A lawless brat, from a council flat, oh,oh.
A little bit of this, and a little bit of that, oh,oh.
A pigeon that was flying better than when it was alive,
A second hand suit and doctor marten boot,
Punk, two tone, infinity and (one step) beyond.
A life lived, given and taken.
No questions asked.

We were that close, it was scary,
We were that close, to getting it right,
Or, crashing and burning.

When time wasn’t of the essence,
When time didn’t mean money.
When time was an irrelevance.

Remember them summer days,
When we took whatever came our way,
And get away, hey, but not too far,
Took a spin round in that broken down car.

The story of Suggs."

The amazing life of the Madness frontman –
in his own words. Available in hardback and ebook
in October 2012

A DVD of Suggs one man show would be nice for those who missed out, but I'll buy the Book anyway Smile

He's still touring the show. The MIS Online had a list of added performances/venues about 2 weeks ago.

I thoroughly enjoyed it in Dartford, Kent, even though a friendly heckler unwittingly did her best to ruin the show!

I had hoped Suggs would bring this to Belfast but no luck so far - so a DVD would be good.

Managed to enter the competition eventually after chasing the link round my phone for 5 minutes before it would let me type anything!

Suggs cancelled his show in Folkestone last week because of 'family reasons' apparently.

Probably so that Suggs can write another chapter about a fabulous year for Madness ? A few stories about the band's performances at Buckingham Palace and The Olympics, would make essential reading. Hopefully, he will also be able to mention another Top 5 album for the band, too. Very Happy

Qui Qui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da.

Dell wash your mouth out old son, it's going to be their first number one (studio) album.

Yes a DVD of the show would be good. I saw it at Dartford back in February (I think) and I gather it has changed a little since then (as all good shows should). A DVD document of it will be most welcome at some stage.

I hope so, old son. It deserves to be. Even better than Norton Folgate, in my opinion.

I'm not sure if it is better. I'm struggling to get away from the quality of lyric writing on Folgate that made it such a good whole. I'd also prefer Oui Oui to have a few more Thompson compositions. I think both Big Time Sister and Doolally would have worked better than My Girl 2, simply because I think they are better songs. When I eventually decide which album is better I will base it on my least favourite tracks. I think Sugar And Spice far outweighs My Girl 2.

Either way it is great that people are squabbling over which album is better (and potentially their best) 33 years into their career. That's got to be worth a smiley. Very Happy

Don't get me wrong, Pledge, Norton Folgate is a class album, but I honestly think that Qui Qui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da edges it. Leon, Powder Blue, Never Knew Your Name, My Girl 2, How Can I Tell You ?, Circus Freaks and Black And Blue are superb tracks. The whole album is superb.

I was also a little shocked that there is only one Lee Thompson track on the album, as he is a prolific and very talented songwriter.

I just hope that the other tracks that Madness recorded in these sessions, particularly 1978 and Big Time Sister, will get an airing on a deluxe edition of the album ? Those songs are far too good to be left in the vaults.

Am I missing an in joke? You do know it's Oui Oui not Qui Qui don't you?

I thought 1978 missed out because it was lyrically similar to Powder Blue, but not quite as good. I may be wrong.

Yeah I think it will be deluxed up at some later stage. Here's hoping...

I think I might have a nice evening out in my home town of Chatham. I saw the show in Dartford right at the start of this year. I would imagine there's a little update to take in the somewhat successful year Madness have had since. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone who has ever liked Madness.
