Post subject: New Ska bands. Reply with quote

The ones i've heard tbh are pretty dreadfull not naming any names.

I find many of them are just bland as xxxx, i went to see one recently locally and for something that is supposed to be dance music it just doesn't make you want to dance.

I'm a musician myself and a bit of train spotter about live music and i just find little things like the guitar sound and the keys sound are just not right for the style of musica and the singers out there are pretty horrendous.

Terry and Suggs would never win any major prizes as singers but blimey they are pretty damn good compared to many out there.

They definately are'nt new and probably don't exist in any form now but years ago a ska band from Weston Super Mare area, used to play a local pub in DURSLEY, and they brought the house down each time. The pub was the Kingshill Inn and the band was "WALLY & THE STOMPERS".

Anyone got any details on them?

To be honest what i find in most of the Ska bands i see is the drummers complete lack or inability to play rimshots on the snare,it's the difference between a really good Ska band and a average one.

They think it's 4 to the floor and away you go. Rolling Eyes

I think The Specials and 2-tone bands had an edge about them and i think thats what i find missing from newer bands of the genre.

I've given this a bit of thought, this is how I see it.

When 2 tone emerged, the bands were closer to the original Jamaican music, both culturally and chronologically. They were only a decade away from the 60s/early 70s rudeboy and skinhead movement in Britain and its music. Reggae was more prevalent with the success of Marley, the vibrant British reggae scene and alliance with punk, bands and sound system deejays etc. All of that made the fusion idea of 2 tone possible

The younger bands, speaking generally, have grown up with a different soundtrack around them, a different musical and cultural environment. So unless they've really gone back and studied all that came before them, it's going to have a different feel.
