Post subject: NME unkind Hyde park words Reply with quote

In the Blur review the writer warns the band what can happen to reformed bands with criticism of New Orders performance and these words - " The Specials are tight and punchy". " They're still a one dimensional museum act wheeled out to please the dads".

i was shocked when i read it and it has taken me several days to calm down.
When i think of seven guys playing the punky sound of concrete jungle to the ten guys playing the skanking classic stupid marriage. One dimensional ! what a twat

The NME lost its credibility many years ago and the guy who wrote that is obviously a t@#t. He's probably a Coldplay fan. Yes, I'm a dad and I love The Specials, but my 18 year old daughter also likes some of their songs. The Specials are unique and unrivalled. And who gives a shit what some non-entity writes about them anyway.

I wasn't at Hyde Park unfortunately but it sounded excellent to me listening on the radio. My son took a shine to The Specials when he was 14 and has seen them live three times so it's obviously not just for us dads. Shame there's not that talent and energy around in this country now.

Just watching the Rizzle Kicks on TV now at V Fest - bet there not around in 2 years never mind 30 years.

Sorry folks but itís just the generation gap and it's what keeps rockíníroll moving forward. Throughout the history of music every generation has rebelled against the sounds and aspiration of the previous one. If you ask me they are duty bound to do so. Think about it. If a bunch of young upstarts didnít disrespect the sounds their parents were listening to there would be no Sun Records, no Beatles or Stones, no hippies or counter-culture, no Punk and if there was no punk there would have been no 2 Tone.

Steady on Willo!! There's a name for that kind of statement, and I don't think it was ever part of The Specials arsenal, either the orignal band or the various partial reformations.
I am a fan.

He probably wrote that so as to prod a reaction out of the old and literal

I'm far to sharp and youthful to fall for that baiting Laughing

The NME is like Smash Hits these days. I last read it in about 10 years ago and it was childish by that point.

....but a journalist writes......

I thought New Order looked old and out of place at Hyde Park.

The Specials set was good.

BLUR are hardly young upstarts taking on the music world are they.

It wasnt meant to be a dangerous line up.

For that they needed mick and keef.

Fuck the nme.......

Sounds was always a better paper anyway....

I think it is the NME that should be in the museum - or maybe just in the bin. A bit of consistency would at least be nice. In 2010 the NME stated there was no-one around more deserving than The Specials for the NME Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution to Music Award. At that time, they said that the reunion gigs were a celebration of one of the most important bands Britain has ever produced, and although there was no real reason to carry on - apart from their continuing relevance, there's something about this group that still feels vital and alive.

.....I was thinking that too

This - and so many of your other posts on here - read like they're motivated by a deep-seated hatred of the reformed group.

I am nearly 18 years old and quite a number of teenagers love/respect/admire The Specials. One girl (who no longer goes to my school) found The Specials via V Fest in 2009. She was hooked.

Don't write what you don't know about.

Why the thinly veiled attacks on the band?

Every post reads like a smear. Are you in the Jerry camp? Is that what it is?

As I posted on the New Material thread:

"If you can recall Paul years ago (before half the punters on this forum joined) I thought the re-union was a bad idea and that was before the Dammers 'in or out show'. And I still stand by that. Some bands, by their shear energy and ferociousness, were never meant to last more than a few years. They said what they had to say then fucked off. Job done. A greatest hits reunion tour that drags on for fours years is the very antithesis this."

If you trawl though the archives of this message board you will discover itís what I have being saying all along.

Shocking you've never been to a gig and yet you think that.

Yes shocking indeed. I was there the first time around and that'll do for me.
