Post subject: UB40 / Getting Over The Storm Reply with quote

I had a quick listen to the album on Amazon and it's terrible, below is a review I found over at Louder Than War.

Late seventies dino-reggae band UB40 have once again dusted off the cobwebs in an attempt to keep their career alive with their 18th studio album, Getting Over The Storm.

Giving credit where due is important, and I have to say I’m impressed with the fact that the band are still releasing new material on a quite regular basis with no real ‘break’ period within their musical career. Or I would be impressed if UB40 were actually doing something new but if this record is anything to go by the band seem to be working very devoutly to a “if it aint broke” ethos, with the songs sounding as if they’ve simply recorded new lyrics over old riffs.

So it makes it difficult to write anything interesting about this record because, quite simply, it isn’t very interesting listening to it. UB40 have become essentially a tribute act to their own sound, living in complete sweat-drenched fear that deviating even slightly from the path they cut out with songs like ‘Red Red Wine’ and ‘Kingston Town’ will result in them becoming a laughing stock among whatever bored housewives are still getting their kicks from songs that are more suited to Blackpool cabaret intended for OAPs to slow dance to than the stadium sized venues this Birmingham formed group seem to do on a regular basis.

Which is an interesting point, really. It is undeniably obvious that 99.9% of the people who have to mortgage their homes to watch the band are paying through the arse to hear the hits, and not whatever half-arsed attempt at new material they pull out every few years. So how do the band handle that at a show, knowing that any statement even close to “we’re gonna play some new stuff” will be met with a shower of false teeth and catheter bags until they’re forced to do ‘I got You Babe’ for the thirteenth time that night. It must be a crushing feeling to know that not a single person gives the slightest fuck about what you’ve done in almost thirty years and the only reason anyone buys your new records is down to three reasons:

1). They thought it was a ‘Greatest Hits’ collection.

2). They’re trying to amass the largest UB40 collection so when they snuff it their Grandkids will have something to sell on eBay.

3). They drank too much at one of the shows, had a spare £20, and thought that the one new song that was somehow squeezed out during the hail of stale biscuits and Werther’s Originals wasn’t all that bad (but this is mainly because it sounds exactly the same as one of the successful singles) so bought it in the hope that maybe they’d bump into one of the band on the way back to the car and would have something to get signed.

If you still want to buy this album then go ahead, but I’m not going to tell you where it’s available from because I don’t care.

ive never understood why people go out of their way just to be negative about something,,, why should i care if someone doesnt like something.
and why should anybody...
think about what would the specials be like if they kept going for 30 years, what kind of stuff would they be producing... not as if their 90,s albums were anything near as good as the first 2 albums or in the studio...

thats the thing with the internet,,,everyones a bloody critic.

The UB fans are too busy fighting the Pro-Ali / Anti-Ali civil war to worry about reviews like this. Sad

Madness, The Selecter and Dexys are still releasing good albums, I always have a listen to new albums but that UB40 album is just horrible and their sound hasn't changed or moved forward one bit in over 20 years and not having the original lead singer on board doesn't help?

That’s why bands should say what they have to say and then piss off. Dragging on well past a sell by date like some old nag that no one has the heart to put out of misery or reforming for the sole purpose of becoming your own tribute act should leave a sour taste in anyone’s mouth.

Who'd have thought it. A UB40 album sounding terrible and them not having moved forward. Doesn't that pretty much sum-up UB40's career? Never liked them. Dreadful, boring band. I'm just amazed the album isn't called 'Labour Of Love 24' or something.

Huh, you people are fools!
The new UB40 album is their best yet.
I've been playing in non stop at full volume since yesterday.

... no, I'm lying. I agree with all the previous comments

Present Arms is a fantastic album with not a duff track on it. Shame they went downhill so rapidly afterwards. Having said that the album 'Who you fighting for?' from a few years back certainly had its moments.

Not a fan of UB40 but they could be doing the rounds with old material circa 79/81. Smile
I think new material is always what any band should be doing whether its good or band, or i don't see the point really.

Both great albums especially Present Arms. Silent Witness gets regular volume treatment Wink

I thought UB44 was good in parts, especially the single releases.

After that, not all that, just mainly tat really Sad

UB40 FORCED TO CANCEL UK TOUR AFTER INJURY TO DRUMMER

UB40 have been forced to cancel their forthcoming UK tour dates due to their drummer, Jimmy Brown, suffering from RSI (repetitive strain injury) in his wrists.

The dates affected are the Sky Dome Arena, Coventry (13th September), and the Planet Ice Arenas in Peterborough (16th Sept), Ryde, (18th Sept) and Cardiff (20th Sept).

A statement from the band’s management said, “UB40 are deeply sorry for the inconvenience this will cause their fans. The band had been looking forward to these shows all summer but, as his treatment continues, Jimmy has been advised not to play for the foreseeable future.”

On Monday the band released their new album, ‘Getting Over The Storm’, which is set to enter the album charts this weekend after receiving rave reviews and being chosen as BBC Radio 2’s ‘Album of The Week’.
