Here's an account from someone who appeared on the sleeve.

It is the best Specials Record ... for many reasons.

How good would it be if they could re-create the front cover with all of those young kids as they are now, in comfortable middle age as 40 and 50-somethings. That'd be a laugh to see.

I always thought the bloke front right looked like he was super-imposed.

It's not only the best Specials record but one of THE best ever records. An absolute classic. Still as good now as it ever was and that live version just managed to capture everything. I didn't think it came across that well on these reunion tours as it seemed to have lost a lot of the aggression the original recording had.

It's the second best Specials record.

It is trumped by this little ditty.

My favorite version of Too Much Too Young is the the old grey whistle test performance, Brilliant I also like the live promo video Smile

The entire Too Much Too Young EP is absolutely amazing not just the lead track Smile

I don't know about others, but my local records shop at the time ignored the advertised selling price of £1.05. Still, it wasn't a bad collection of tracks for the £1.25 or whatever it was I was charged. Wink

I always liked the smiling Skinhead, though I believe his photo was added on the cover later because he wasn't actually there? he was a massive Specials fan and Jerry wanted him on the picture sleeve though I could be wrong? Smile

A certain Jett Rink posted that very story on here some time ago. I know technology wasn't what it is today, but that photo (of the skinhead) was really badly imposed into the crowd shot. Given Dammers history of attention to detail we only presume it was done that way on purpose.

If I'm not mistaken the shot of the crowd was by Jerry Dammers but at a Selecter gig.

This EP for me is their best record and captures a moment when the Specials really arrived. I know people who know nothing about the Specials but still know Too Much Too Young.

It was played at every disco/party and we sang it around school. Great memories. Guns of Navarone and the Skinhead symphony sound just as good as well.

I agree with some of the previous comments that this track in particular kind of lost some of it's punk aggression on reunion tours but was still great nonetheless. This recording just oozes youthful aggression with a punk edge and I don't think it's something you can recreate live years later. It just captures the Specials / 2 tone experience at it's height.

Saying that I think the live version of Carry Go Bring Come @ Tiffanys is also a bloody great example of a live 2 tone recording.
Cool

Too Much Too Young sung live now does not even come close to the sound on this EP. Cool

If there was ever a Specials song that oozed youth, anger and spite then it's the live EP version of Too Much Too Young. The tack just drips with venom.

That Newsnight performance is just a bunch of middle aged blokes going through the motions for the sake of a pay cheque.

I couldn't recall Madness being in the charts with My Girl at the same time as Too Much Too Young, but then again I'm at a age were I stuggle to recall quite a few things. Sad

One thing I do remember is that for the most of 1980 there appeared to be a 2 Tone/ska act in the charts just about every week. Or that's the way it seemed. That and LP's being about £4 each.

The Selecter, The Beat, Madness and The Specials were all in the top 30 in last nights programme Smile

Shame about the crowd noise during The Specials, it drowned out most of the words and the last line was also cut like last week.

In the olden days, the next record was the best.
