Anyone watching the new series ? Ive been waiting 4 years for this, but l really do think the first 2 episodes have been very poor. l do hope it picks up. The slowed up scenes of people dancing off their heads on god knows what has really been dragged out and made the whole show so slow and quite frankly boring.
The fact they have incorporated the whole Madchester scene into it is fine, but was never my thing and maybe adds to the reason lm not hugely impressed this time.

Britain is great, but you need to see all around Britain.

I haven't watched any of the current programmes, though I hear Combo (Stephen Graham) will be appearing in Ep3 of the series.

I think it's been excellent.

The most noticeable thing about the 2 episodes that have been on so far is the fact that it's been over before you know it. I've actually had to double check the time when it's ended, such is the extent to which it's flown by.

Following the reaction online however, loads of people are saying what everyone else here - it's dull, it's slow, it's this, it's that.

It's a social, character based drama, full of good characters and funny dialogue. It also leaves you shocked and covering your eyes at times.

Last night's episode was hard to sit through, such was the subject matter and quality of the acting.

Just superb.

This week's episode was hard to watch at times. Fucking superb. 10/10 for everyone around that table. Lol and Kelly especially were off the scale. Even Shaun, who largely didnt say a word, but just sat there. Yet he genuinely looked like someone who had to sit and watch the car crash of all time happen in front of him.

I think the whole franchise is pretty poor, it has it moments (Flip and Higgy) and is watchable, but I feel its highly over rated particularly in the Skinhead/Scooter/Ska/Reggae/etc scene.

Some of the acting, particularly in the film and earlier series is so bad it makes some of the actors on Eastenders look like graduates from RADA.

Regarding this series.
There was a whole new Ska revival happening in 1990, shame none of the characters seem aware of this, probably because the writer himself was no more than a 12 month bandwagoner back in his youth.

I think the fact Shane Meadows has dared to move away from the skinhead thing that gave birth to This Is England, will successfully put paid to any high regard many will have of this.......

I watched the film again recently and after a few years since I last watched it I have to admit I found some of it rather cringe worthy. It all seems rather clichéd. If it wasn' t for the ska/skinhead connection I wouldn't have given it second glance in the first place.

As for the series, I haven' t had an inkling to watch any of them.

Got it in a nutshell.

The skinhead theme was only a vehicle for the story - those who thought it the story completely miss the point.

According to Meadows himself it (the skinhead theme) was a major part of it.

If This is England 86, 88 & '90 had moved away from Skinheads why are most the original cast still wearing the clothes throughout the series?

Shane Meadows should have brought in new characters for 86, 88 & '90 for a new audience?

I didn't get that from that interview at all - personally still think the skinhead aspect was a vehicle to drive the story on - it could have been punks, mods or whatever...it was sussessful despite being about skinheads, not because of

I felt the same after episode 2. Very nearly moaned about it on my Facebook page, got distracted and didn't.

Without wishing to issue any spoilers for those who have not watched it, episodes 3 and 4 really make it. What's more they make episodes 1 and 2 make a hell of a lot of sense.

I really hope this isn't the end of the line. Too much has been invested in these characters and their stories for us not to care where they were another 4 years down the line. I think '96,'97 or '98 would all be good years. Hell '94 would be good too, especially if someone's into Terry Hall's solo album 'Home'.

Seriously though, the whole New Labour and the great big con that Tony Blair sold us all, albeit with a sound thrashing handed out to the Tories would be a good time to catch up with them again.

There should be BAFTA nominations for this last series, and not just for usual suspects such as Vicky McClure. Stephen Graham and Chanel Cresswell deserve some recognition.
