Very Happy Very Happy

Fronted by Pauline Black, the seven-piece Selecter were unique in marrying female vocals with infectious ska rhythms. The Coventry-based band were in the vanguard of the 2-Tone craze that shook up the post-punk music scene and set it dancing: this Rockstage performance, filmed at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal in summer 1980, catches their original and best line-up delivering signature tracks like ‘Too Much Pressure’, ‘On My Radio’ and an energetic rendition of the ‘James Bond Theme’.

Access All Areas (CD+DVD)

1. The Whisper
2. Out On The Streets
3. Missing Words
4. Street Feeling
5. Black And Blue
6. On My Radio
7. James Bond Theme
8. They Make Me Mad
9. Everyday (Time Hard)
10. Too Much Pressure
11. Train To Skaville

Release Date: 18/09/2015 Very Happy

This was first mooted about 5 years ago so great to see it finally being released. It's the first 2 Tone related release in years that I'm really looking forward to getting. I see the Madness/Modettes one is coming out too.

I am not 100% sure but this may be the Celebrate the Bullet line up of The Selecter. I seem to recall Pauline Black wearing a jumpsuit and sporting an afro when this was first broadcast. Or that could be another TV show I am thinking of. Here's the poster for the gig.

The Whisper was on Top of The Pops 28/8/1980.

The recording could of course be from an earlier gig at the same venue. I now struggle to remember where I parked my car every time I walk out of Tesco's so I could be talking bollocks about something on TV of 30 years ago.

There was a certain irony in The Selecter leaving 2 Tone and then have the latest signing to that very label support them!!

Trojan

Their is a short clip of On My Radio from the DVD near the end of this preview, Charley Anderson is still with the band, unless his replacement also has Dreadlocks? I'm guessing the gig was recorded in 1980 and broadcast April 1981 Smile

If Charlie and Desmond are still in the band in this DVD then that makes this release all the more significant, because it would be one last shows by the original line up. They left 2 Tone in July and less than two weeks after this gig the band played as a 5 piece for the Top Of the Pops performance of The Whsiper. No prizes for guessing which two members didn't make it to the BBC Centre.

After all these years I never thought that this gig would see the light of dayagain. It's like Santa coming early.

Their is a small picture of Desmond Brown on the CD Sleeve so It's definitely the original line-up Smile

I saw that picture of Desmond Brown but I wasn't too sure if the cover was made up of an actual stills from the gig or just stock photo's.

Like others have said at last it’s a release to get excited about. I watched the original broadcast on a portable black and white TV and I’m still trying to get my head around the fact that 34 years later I will be able to watch it again. And in colour.

How's that for making yourself feel old?

I remember it well! Stayed up at 11pm one night to watch it. In fact, both Selecter and Madness (Joe Jackson and Squeeze were also featured).
I'm glad it's finally released and I may treat myself if I've any spare wedge.
