Taper: Minnesota Mike

This is straight from the mastertape. I have not done any EQing, filtering, editing, or any kind of tampering with the sound.

I don't put sound ratings on these uploads -- I'd prefer to have somebody independent (such as yourself) judge that. So, after you've downloaded and listened, post a comment on the sound quality.

Minnesota Mike made audience recordings of shows in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area between 1978 to 1985. He used a stereo Sony TC-D5 tape recorder and two Shure studio microphones, top-of-the-line equipment in those days. He recorded shows just for himself and never made copies. I met him years later and he allowed me to trade tape copies around 1993. Later when the technology became available, I traded some on CDR. So some of the copies that are out there are second generation or more, and some are digital copies of the master. I wasn't a very active trader and, in fact, some of Mike's tapes have never circulated. The digital copies I'm uploading now were made in 2006 with azimuth adjustments on the tapedeck and a Terratec EWX soundcard to the computer.

Thanks for this.

One of the few recordings out there of the original Selecter's version of 'Madness'.

Look forward to hearing this. There was another from that tour that sounded great. (Or was it the same one?)

Btw, as some will know, Minneapolis was Prince's hometown. There's a picture of him from that period wearing a two tone badge that says 'Rude Boy', but I can't find it online.

There is a recording of an Amsterdam gig dated 1.2.80 which is superb quality. It contains a version of Lee Perry's Soulful I (or Soulful Eye as it is states on the track listing).

This is superb quality - if only all live recordings sounded this good. This is far superior to the sound on the Access All Areas release.

Really good to hear Madness and Live Injection. Also really liked the extended version of Out On The Streets and the live version of The Selecter.

Thanks for sharing.

To be fair the Access All Areas has the sound of the second album creeping in. This one has a much more heavy sound, with a great driving Hammond organ sound to the fore. The band is certainly playing at full throttle.

Other than this, as far as I aware the only other quality gig recordings of The Selecter 1979 – 1980 are:

BBC In Concert
Live In Amsterdam
Access All Areas
Live at Birmingham Polly.

There is of course the live material released on 2 Tone, but are there any other quality bootlegs out there? There are a few cassette recordings but they are the usual Nth generation underwater sounding recordings.

There are a couple of more out there at least, Trojan...Lewisham Odeon from March 1980, New Orleans May 1980 and Milan from December 1980. And I possibly have an old tape of a Hamburg gig, would need to check.

Cheers parkedcars for the link, seems like ages since I've heard anything 'new' 2-Tone-wise. Look forward to hearing this gig

I have all those you mentioned, mangeire, but none are of any great quality. The New Orleans is probably the best of that bunch.

Quality live recordings by The Selecter from back in the day are thin on the ground.
