Churchill also opposed votes for women and the formation of the NHS. _________________ Richard Eddington is innocent.

On Wednesday - at a loose end - I walked into this event - which turned out to be a sort of book tour - and one of the ways that Americans are struggling with history or revisionist history - which Harry has brought up in this post.
For them it is race and colour - the songs Tim McGraw chose were so far away from anything I would have imagined "Over There" George M. Cohan - interpreted as a soft and beautiful lullaby - Mickey Newbery from "Frisco Mabel Joy" which I would NEVER have thought I would hear live - and for these two Southern men an uncomfortable and unresolved love of "Dixie" as it's about Southern slaves and cotton and yet, a song they love and grew up loving.

They waved and acknowledged Carole King in the audience and I nearly fell out of the box rubbernecking : (
One callous friend described being posted overseas as the them and us deployment as a way to distinguish - "Good and easy identifiable working class" and the Churchill debate is the same but different. _________________ marigold |

Good article, Harry.
Young British people today will probably be far less in thrall to figures like Winston Churchill - that is, if they even know him. The only exception would be on occasions of war memorial. The generation that came along just after ww2 and the latter years of the British empire were far more deferential. |

I'm not a fan of Boris Johnson. If he were just a pundit / chat show guest I might feel differently but I really don't want him to be P.M.
I try to understand why so many people hate Jeremy Corbyn and love Boris Johnson. Part of Johnson's appeal, it would appear, is that he reminds people of Churchill. WInston is still put on pound notes and voted best Briton ever etc there is something about his bull dog spirit / attitude that a high percentage of people always seem to love _________________ I got one art O'level it did nothing for me |

There's definitely something in the Churchill/Johnson comparison. I can handle the jingoism, just about; at least this time round it won't mean Britain going around the globe setting up colonies. |

I agree that Boris as a panel show guest is very entertaining. The reasons for him not being PM are endless. He was sacked from two previous jobs for lying. And as for his time as Foreign Secretary....
Boris has recently said that if "we can put a man on the moon we can solve the problem of the Irish border".
Let's see him sort this out.
