I was listening to an old compilation album yesterday and this track came on.

I love Janet Kay's vocal but it's also the arrangement and production that make it so perfect. I forgot how good it was.
I noticed on Facebook Janet's collaborator Dennis Bovell is doing a free show
on Saturday 7th Sept at The White Horse in Peckham at 9pm

There's a good interview with Dennis Bovell where he talks about how one part of the finished track came about by accident. Drummie Zeb of Aswad played drums on it, and had been asked to keep a constant beat throughout. In the lead-up to the chorus, he stopped playing suddenly to emphasise the words 'play...your....si-lly...games', which Dennis wasn't happy about at first. Then on listening back to it, it sounded just right.

Terry's favourite lyricist Leonard Cohen has a line about it's only when something cracks that the light can get through. (Meaning the best songs, paintings, films all have a few happy accidents and brilliant mistakes in them)

"You never hear the same arrangement twice. We make so many mistakes—I do, because I’m changing things around. But they’re professional enough to cover it. If they make a mistake, I teach ‘em: go back, make that same mistake, and make something out of it. Because that’s the way jazz was born—somebody goofed! So you just go ahead; it’s not a mistake—you just build." - Art Blakey

Adam Cohen on Leonard Cohen
"I remember something he told me when I was 16 and starting to take songwriting seriously. He said there’s a moment when you’re blocked on a song, or on any work, and it’s only when you’re about to quit having put much, much more time than you planned into it that the work begins. That’s when you’ve crossed the threshold of being on the right track"
