Post subject: Elvis Costello on In The Studio Reply with quote

This is from a 1983 interview on the Australian music show Nightmoves. He's mainly talking about his then latest album Goodbye Cruel World but speaks about In The Studio just over a minute in. Also refers to the album later in the clip (5.18 ), which is about 9 mins.

That's an extensive list, Harry. Mr Costello's knowledge of music is broad to say the least. It would have been interesting if he'd produced the entire In The Studio album, and for musical reasons as well as pure logistics, I reckon there'd have been less delay.

I'd love it if Costello, Dammers, Robert Wyatt and Paul Weller made an album together.

Too many cooks? I could see some duet collaborations working but I'm not a fan of those kinds of 'supergroups'. It's the same with some of those albums with lots of special guests. The end result usually ends up being less than the individual parts. They each bring a certain amount of baggage of expectation because you already know what each artist does. I'd rather hear them all individually on their own projects playing to their strengths.

It'd be nice of course if Jerry did some music under his own name but maybe it's that inability to let the music go, as Elvis mentioned, which prevents this from happening.

I didn't think of them being a supergroup just collaborating on a record the way their Jazz heroes would have done in the 60s.
I find in interesting how for a time in the 70s artists on Island records would all play on each others L.Ps
John Cale played on Nick Drakes album, Eno and Richard Thompson played on Cale's etc.
